Using a Fotona dental laser, small, carefully planned amounts of excess gum tissue are gently removed to reveal more of the natural tooth surface that's already sitting underneath. The tooth isn't shortened or altered — the change happens entirely at the gum.
Because the laser works with a fine, focused beam of light, it suits this kind of precise, small-scale reshaping. At our Bacchus Marsh clinic it is usually done under local anaesthetic in a single appointment, and the amount of gum adjusted is planned with you beforehand so the result sits in proportion with your smile and face, not a fixed template. Clinicians commonly define a gummy smile as more than 3 mm of gum showing when you smile (a 2025 review of gummy smile research, received 1 December 2025), and the causes vary, so we look at them before recommending anything.
