Before we talk treatment

This page is for you if any of this sounds familiar.

No pressure to read further if it doesn't. We'd rather you find your way here knowing it's the right page — not the loudest one.

  • You've been told you snore — every night, not just when you're tired.
  • One of you has been quietly sleeping in the spare room.
  • You wake up tired even after eight hours.
  • Your partner has stopped joking about it. That feels worse than the elbows.
  • You've wondered whether a sleep study is the right step but haven't booked one.
  • You've heard about laser snoring care and want to understand whether it's actually for you.

This probably isn't the right page for you if you've already had a sleep study, been diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnoea, and started CPAP therapy.

In that case, your sleep physician is the right person for that part of your care — and we're happy to chat any time about anything dental that supports your CPAP plan.

Snoring vs sleep apnoea

Snoring isn't always just snoring.

The two get tangled together, partly because the symptoms can look the same from the outside. A simple, plain-English explanation of where they sit on the same spectrum — and why the difference matters before any treatment.

01

Simple snoring

Air vibrating against relaxed tissues at the back of the throat. Annoying for whoever shares the room. On its own, it isn't usually a medical emergency — but it can quietly affect both partners' rest. It is common: the Sleep Health Foundation (fact sheet dated March 21, 2024) says about 40% of men and 30% of women have at least mild snoring on some nights, and about 15% of people snore on most nights.

02

Obstructive sleep apnoea

The airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep. Breathing pauses, the body partly wakes itself to re-open the airway, and the morning still feels exhausting. This is a medical condition and needs proper assessment by a sleep physician.

03

The honest middle

It's often hard to know which side of the line you sit on until you've been assessed. Our role isn't to diagnose sleep apnoea — it's to help you see when a medical assessment should come first, and what to consider afterwards. The Sleep Health Foundation says over 10% of regular snorers have sleep apnoea to a significant degree, which is why the first step is a proper look at your airway.

How NightLase works

The idea is quietly simple.

The idea is quietly simple: gently firm the tissues at the back of the throat, so they vibrate less.

We use carefully controlled pulses of Er:YAG laser light on the soft palate and surrounding tissues. The heat is calibrated to encourage natural collagen tightening over the following weeks — no cutting, no needles, no anaesthetic. Most people describe the sensation as warmth, not pain.

For some people with simple snoring, NightLase can reduce how loud and how often they snore. We'll keep saying it: results vary, and we'd rather be clear about that at our Bacchus Marsh clinic than promise something we can't.

Limits that matter

A few things NightLase is not.

It isn't surgery.

It isn't a treatment for severe obstructive sleep apnoea — that needs a sleep physician.

It isn't a promise. Some people respond well, some partially and some not much at all. We'll tell you honestly what seems likely for you before we start.

It isn't a substitute for a sleep study if one is indicated.

Where the laser actually goes

Three small zones — the same ones where snoring most often begins.

Each NightLase session passes gently over these three areas. No injections, no incisions, nothing taken away. The tissue is encouraged to firm naturally over the following weeks.

Zone 01

The tonsillar pillars

The arches at the sides of the throat — the first stop. Gentle laser passes encourage firming along these tissues.

Zone 02

The soft palate

The most classic source of snoring vibration. The laser is moved across the soft palate in a steady, calm pattern.

Zone 03

The base of the tongue

The quiet contributor in heavier snoring patterns. We finish with this area when it's part of your picture.

What the first visit actually looks like

The conversation first. Then a plan, in plain English.

A common reason people put this off is not knowing what they're walking into. Here's the whole first visit, step by step.

  1. A conversation.

We'll ask about your sleep, your partner's experience, the snoring pattern, any morning tiredness, and what you've already tried. Bring your partner if you can — they may notice things you don't.

  2. An airway look.

One of our dentists checks the soft palate, tonsillar area, tongue position, jaw alignment, and bite. It's a look and a conversation — no teeth-cleaning, no needles — and we don't usually need scans for it.

  3. A direction, not a sales pitch.

We'll either suggest you seek a medical assessment first, explain whether NightLase is a sensible fit for your anatomy, or talk through a custom mouthguard that brings the jaw forward. Sometimes the answer is “wait and watch” — and that's okay too.

  4. A plan you can take home.

The aim is for you to leave with a clear sense of what's going on and what your options are. Nothing booked unless you want it booked.

What the visit feels like

  • 20–30 minutes for the first consult.
  • One of our dentists, not a salesperson.
  • No teeth-cleaning, no needles — and we explain each step as we go.
  • You're welcome to bring your partner — it can help to have them there.

If you choose NightLase

  • Three short sessions, usually three to four weeks apart.
  • Around 20 minutes per session.
  • No needles, no anaesthetic, and little to no downtime.
  • You can eat, drink, and talk as normal afterwards.
  • We talk through fees clearly at the consult, not by email.

The same LightWalker platform is also used for laser cavity treatment and laser ceramic debonding.

NightLase questions

NightLase in Bacchus Marsh, answered.

Short answers to what people ask before booking. If yours isn't here, call (03) 8001 7008.

NightLase is a non-surgical laser treatment for snoring. At Magical Smiles Bacchus Marsh we use the Er:YAG wavelength of the Fotona LightWalker to gently warm the soft palate and nearby tissue at the back of the mouth, which can help it firm up and vibrate less. There is no cutting and no injection.
No. NightLase is for simple snoring. If you might have obstructive sleep apnoea, a sleep physician needs to assess you first, before any snoring treatment is considered.
The usual plan is three short sessions of around 20 minutes, spaced three to four weeks apart. Your dentist confirms the plan after checking your airway at our Bacchus Marsh clinic.
Many people describe a feeling of warmth. No needles or anaesthetic are used, and you can eat, drink and talk as normal afterwards. Experiences vary, so tell your dentist straight away if anything feels uncomfortable.
No, results vary. Some people with simple snoring notice it becomes quieter and less frequent, some see a partial change and some see little change. We explain what is realistic for you before you start, and a custom mouthguard that brings the jaw forward is another option we can discuss.
At Magical Smiles Bacchus Marsh, 83 Gisborne Road, Bacchus Marsh VIC 3340. Call (03) 8001 7008 or book online, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. Your first visit is a conversation and an airway check, and fees are explained before anything is booked.
When you're ready

Start with an individual assessment.

This page is general information about snoring, airway concerns and the NightLase laser treatment offered at Magical Smiles Bacchus Marsh. It isn't medical advice and it isn't a diagnosis. Suspected obstructive sleep apnoea should always be assessed by a sleep physician.
Outcomes from any treatment, including NightLase, vary from person to person. Suitability is assessed individually, and we'll discuss what is likely — and what isn't — at your first consultation.
