The short version
Whitening is rarely just about teeth. It's about the photo you didn't post, or the laugh you kept half-closed because you were thinking about your front teeth.
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural colour of your teeth. A dentist applies a peroxide gel under controlled conditions, and with TouchWhite a dental laser helps activate it. Results vary with your starting shade, the type of staining and how your teeth respond.
What it won't do: change the colour of any veneers, crowns or fillings you already have. What it can do, for the right person, is lighten your natural teeth enough that you stop noticing them.

How it works
What the laser actually does in your mouth.
In-chair whitening is a chemical process. The gel does the whitening; the laser's job is to help activate it.
i. The gel does the bleaching.
A hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel is applied to the front surfaces of your teeth after your gums are protected. Its active ingredients break down the stain molecules that coffee, tea, wine and age leave in the enamel.
ii. The laser helps activate the gel.
With TouchWhite, the Fotona LightWalker's Er:YAG laser is directed at your teeth in short, controlled passes to support the gel's chemistry. Fotona says this wavelength is absorbed by the water in the whitening gel rather than passing on into the tooth.
iii. Comfort is checked as you go.
Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold is the most common side effect of whitening. We ask about your sensitivity history first and check in with you throughout. Individual experiences vary.
iv. Two or three cycles, not one long session.
Most appointments use two or three cycles of 15 to 30 minutes, with fresh gel between them, so your shade and comfort can be checked along the way.

The equipment
One platform. Two wavelengths. One job here.
Our Bacchus Marsh clinic uses a Fotona LightWalker, a dental laser with two wavelengths. For TouchWhite whitening we use its Er:YAG wavelength. The same system supports several other laser treatments listed further down this page.
Laser dentistry needs specific equipment and training, which our team has completed. During the laser passes, you, your dentist and the assistant wear protective glasses.
Laser whitening is one option, not the only one. Take-home trays are a slower alternative, and your dentist explains which suits your teeth.

Much of the appointment is preparation, protection and checking. The whitening cycles themselves are only part of it.
i · Consultation & suitability.
We check your gums, look for decay and work out what is causing your discolouration. Whitening only helps some causes, and we'll be honest about that.
ii · A clean if needed.
Surface debris is cleaned away first, so the gel can reach the enamel.
iii · Shade record.
We note your starting shade so you can compare at the end and at later check-ups.
iv · Protection (10–15 min).
A protective barrier goes over your gums and protective glasses go on for everyone in the room.
v · Gel and laser cycles (15–30 min each).
The gel is applied to your front teeth and activated, usually over two or three cycles with fresh gel between each. We check in with you throughout.
vi · Desensitising if needed.
Your dentist may apply a desensitising agent at the end to help with any immediate sensitivity.
vii · Final shade check.
The gel and barrier are removed, your mouth is rinsed and we compare the new shade with your starting shade.
viii · Aftercare.
We explain how to look after your teeth: a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, rinsing after staining drinks, using a straw and avoiding tobacco.

TouchWhite is Fotona's in-chair whitening protocol. A registered dentist applies a peroxide whitening gel to your teeth and uses a dental laser to help activate it. At Magical Smiles Bacchus Marsh it is done in one supervised appointment after an assessment of your teeth and gums.
Your gums are covered with a protective barrier, then a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel is applied to your front teeth. The laser is directed at the teeth for a set time to help the gel break down stain molecules in the enamel. Most appointments use two or three cycles of 15 to 30 minutes, with fresh gel between cycles.
No. Yellow or brown staining from food, coffee, tea and red wine often lightens more readily than grey discolouration or staining from some medications. Whitening does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers. Your dentist identifies the cause of your discolouration first and tells you whether whitening is likely to help.
Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold is the most commonly reported side effect, and it usually settles within a few days. Some people also notice mild gum irritation. Tell us about any past sensitivity before your appointment; your dentist may apply a desensitising agent at the end if needed.
Plan for about 60 to 90 minutes. Around 10 to 15 minutes goes on examining your teeth and protecting your gums, and the rest is the whitening cycles, removing the gel and explaining aftercare.
Results can last from several months to a few years. They fade faster if you often have coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. Brushing twice a day, rinsing with water after staining drinks, using a straw and keeping up regular check-ups all help.
Whitening may not be suitable if you have extensive tooth decay, gum disease or very thin enamel. These need treatment or a different approach first. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and medical history before recommending whitening.
Yes, and it is often recommended. Whitening your natural teeth first lets new veneers, bonding or crowns be matched to the lighter shade. If you already have crowns or veneers, they will not change colour, so your dentist explains how whitened teeth will look beside them.
Yes. A take-home kit includes custom-fitted trays for your upper and lower teeth and whitening gel syringes, so you can whiten at your own pace over several days or weeks. Replacement gel syringes are available if you already have trays. Your dentist shows you how to use them.
As at September 2026, our budget estimator uses an indicative starting figure of $650 for TouchWhite laser whitening. Take-home kits are priced separately. Most health funds treat whitening as cosmetic, so it is usually not covered. You receive a written quote before treatment, and payment plans are available subject to approval.
